Excavation is the dirt work that comes before and after clearing: grading a homesite, cutting in a driveway, digging for drainage or utilities, and prepping pads. Many land clearing operators also run excavators, dozers, and skid steers, so this hub overlaps with the clearing pages on purpose.
The operators below offer excavation work in one or more of the counties this directory covers. Call them directly for site visits and pricing.

Common Excavation Work

- Drainage ditches, culverts, and water control
- Pond and trail digging, where permitted
- Digging for utilities and site prep for construction
What Shapes the Price
Dirt work is priced by the job, not the acre, in most cases. Rock is the big variable in this part of Tennessee: a site that digs easy and a site that hits rock a foot down are very different jobs. Slope, haul off or fill dirt needs, and how far material has to move all matter too. Expect the operator to want to see the site before giving a firm number.
Permits and Utilities
Before anyone digs, buried utilities have to be located. In Tennessee, call 811 or submit a Tennessee One Call request ahead of the dig. Ask the operator who handles that step and any permits your job needs.
Before You Hire
Confirm insurance, agree on the finished grade and what happens to excess dirt or rock, and get the scope and price in writing. A listing here is information, not an endorsement.
